D.A.R.E. Officer Training (DOT) is 80 hours and certifies the officer to teach both elementary and
middle school and certifies the officer to perform as a School Resource Officer (SRO).

The RWJ Study-The University of Akron designed the middle and high school curricula. All curricula
are science-based, age appropriate, reading level appropriate and written by a national panel of
curriculum and prevention experts.
Findings-More students decided against using drugs, More students found drug use socially
inappropriate and believed fewer peers used drugs, Fewer students reported intent to use inhalants,
More students learned how to refuse drugs.
With funding from the world’s largest health care philanthropy, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,
over 19,000 students in six cities have been monitored from the 7th through 11th grades with regular
surveys on attitudes and behaviors
According to Dr. Sloboda, the principal investigator of the study, “The D.A.R.E. network has the ability
to rapidly diffuse through national training new and effective prevention programs and to monitor the
quality of delivery,” says Sloboda, “Simply put, there is no comparable national prevention delivery
network like D.A.R.E. in the US.”
What is the Cost of New D.A.R.E?
D.A.R.E. America pays for all workbooks for the first year of any new D.A.R.E. program. After that the
cost of a D.A.R.E. workbook is .89 cents.
Cost of incarcerating a prisoner is between $25,000-$40,000 per year.
In addition to state training centers, D.A.R.E. America also sponsors and pays for officer and mentor
officer trainings.
